Note

Please be sure to read this article before downloading to ensure that this version is right for you.

We are upgrading the SmartClient to support a newer version of the NetSuite SuiteTalk Web Services endpoint. End users would need to install the new app to continue using it.

These changes do not impact users of the newer (recommended) edition, CloudExtend Excel Data Management for NetSuite.

Reason for this change

Prior versions of the SmartClient were built to utilize a NetSuite SuiteTalk Web Services endpoint that has been retired by NetSuite with its 2022.1 release.

Should I upgrade the SmartClient or move to the new app?

We realize this can be confusing so let's get some terminology straight first.

  • The legacy version, ie SmartClient, was our first iteration of the app and is a Windows only product.

  • The new edition, CloudExtend Excel Data Management for NetSuite which was launched in 2017 uses the new Microsoft add-in framework and receives regular updates, and works on Mac, PC, and Excel online.

Review the use cases in the table below to determine which edition is right for you.

What you need to know about the latest SmartClient release

We have updated the SOAP Web Services endpoint to the latest version that continues to offer support for basic credentials to fix this issue which will unblock users. There are no added features with this release, and it only includes the Web Services endpoint change which has no visible change to the end users.

Note

  • Users will still be able to login to the SmartClient using basic authentication (username and password).

  • For roles where 2FA is mandatory, a custom role has to be created and used for 2FA role token based authentication is mandatory. Contact support if you need help.

FAQ

  1. What are my options to login to the SmartClient after my NetSuite instance is upgraded to 2022.1?

We are already in the process of implementing the CloudExtend Excel Data Management for NetSuite that supports all the SmartClient features. Read the section below in ‘Retiring the Classic Edition’.

  3. Will the new version of CloudExtend Excel Data Management for NetSuite support SmartClient features?

Yes, efforts on this are in motion and expected to be live before the end of 2022.

  4. Can I use both applications?

Enterprise Edition customers that require the SmartClient for specific use cases can receive a complimentary license to the SmartClient. Contact sales for more details.

Retiring the SmartClient

We are happy to share that we are working towards releasing the updated version of CloudExtend Excel Data Management for NetSuite which has significantly more features than the SmartClient already. We expect to reach full feature parity between editions by adding support for the few missing features only present in SmartClient and to start migrating users by end of 2022 at which point we will provide notice that we will end of life the SmartClient. We will update this article as development efforts continue.

Why is the SmartClient going to be discontinued?

The original SmartClient was built on the old, Windows Desktop-specific VSTO technology. Microsoft is focusing their efforts on a new Office Add-in Framework and it is their strategy to pursue this new framework and drop mainstream support for VSTO.

With the increased popularity of cloud-based Office suites and Apple devices in the workplace, we have chosen the same path and have built the new CloudExtend Excel Data Management for NetSuite which is on the future-proof, cross-platform Office.js Add-in Framework. This platform enables add-ins to run on Office for Windows Desktop, Office Online, Office for Mac, and eventually on Office for Mobile devices.
