FAQ: Recommended Cache & Cookie Settings for ExtendInsights Data Management

For most users, no action is required.
This article only applies in specific legacy scenarios and can safely be ignored by the majority of customers.


When Is This Article Relevant?

ExtendInsights Excel add-ins are Microsoft web apps. Microsoft not ExtendInsights determines which browser is used to render the add-in inside Excel.

Most users

  • Windows 10 or later

  • Microsoft 365 subscription

  • Excel desktop or Excel Online

In these environments, Microsoft automatically uses Microsoft Edge (Chromium) to render the add-in.

๐ŸŸข If your add-in is rendered in Edge (Chromium), no cache or cookie changes are needed.

If youโ€™re unsure which browser is being used to render the add-in, refer to this documentation on Office add-in browsers.


โš ๏ธ When Do You Need These Steps?

Continue reading only if:

  • The add-in is being rendered in Internet Explorer 11, and

  • You are experiencing issues loading or using ExtendInsights

This scenario typically occurs on older or unpatched environments.


Allow the ExtendInsights App in Internet Explorer 11

  1. Open Internet Explorer 11.

  2. Click the gear icon (top-right) and select Internet Options.

  3. Go to the Privacy tab.

  4. Click Sites.

  5. Enter the following URL and click Allow:

    https://smartclient.io

Allow Third-Party Cookies in Internet Explorer 11

  1. In Internet Explorer 11, open Internet Options.

  2. Select the Privacy tab.

  3. Click Advanced.

  4. Ensure the following options are enabled:

    • Accept first-party cookies

    • Accept third-party cookies

    • Always allow session cookies

  5. Click OK to save your changes.

These settings allow the ExtendInsights add-in to store required session data when rendered in Internet Explorer.


Summary

  • Most users do not need to change cache or cookie settings

  • No action is required if Edge (Chromium) is used

  • Only IE11 users experiencing issues should follow the steps above
