FAQ: Picklist Selection - Cell Operations

ExtendInsights Data Management | Learn how to use the Cell Operations (picklist) panel

Updated today

Cell Operations Overview

ExtendInsights includes a redesigned Cell Operations panel for picklist (List/Record) fields. The panel is:

  • Draggable, so you can view more values while working in your sheet

  • Expandable/minimizable, so it stays out of the way when not needed

  • Designed to help you quickly select valid NetSuite values without manually looking up IDs

Video Walkthrough

To try it:

  1. Load a template.

  2. Click a cell mapped to a List/Record (picklist) field.

  3. In the lower part of the ExtendInsights panel, expand Cell Operations to select a value from the list or clear the field.

Populate Picklist Fields

Option 1: Select from the picklist (Cell Operations panel)

Click the cell, expand Cell Operations, and choose a value from the list. This is the most reliable option when multiple matches exist.

Option 2: Type-ahead (Auto-complete)

You can type directly in the Excel cell. ExtendInsights will attempt to resolve what you entered:

  • If it finds an exact match, it resolves automatically.

  • If there are multiple matches, you may be prompted to select the correct one from the picklist panel.

Power-user option: Use Internal IDs directly

If you already know the NetSuite internal ID for a list value, you can enter it in this format:

  • [[1234]]

NetSuite will map the correct list value during upload.

How to Refresh Picklist Values

ExtendInsights caches picklist values for performance. If a new value was added in NetSuite but is not showing in the picklist:

  1. Click the picklist cell.

  2. Expand Cell Operations.

  3. Click the three dots (⋯).

  4. Select Refresh.

If the refresh still does not bring in the value, follow your Refresh Metadata guide (different methods may apply depending on whether it’s a picklist cache issue vs. a field/metadata issue).

Set Value to Empty

For header-level list-type fields, you can clear the field using Set value to empty in the Cell Operations panel.

🖐️ Note:

Important limitations:

  • Currently supported only for header-level fields

  • Requires Real-time upload

  • Clearing sublist (line-level) picklist fields is not supported using this toggle due to NetSuite SOAP limitations

Workarounds for Clearing Values (When “Set value to empty” is not available)

If you need to clear values that aren’t supported by the toggle (especially sublist fields), use Background Upload and the supported clearing syntax.

Step 1: Turn on Background Upload

Enable Background Upload in Settings (or use the Background Upload option on upload). Visit the article here.

Step 2: Use the correct clearing syntax

  • Header-level TEXT fields: enter :empty:

  • Sublist (line-level) DROPDOWN fields: enter [[null]]

Step 3: Upload back to NetSuite

Run the upload using Background Upload so the clearing instructions are applied.
