Working with Analytics and Data Management: How to make the best of both

ExtendInsights Excel Apps | Use Analytics and Data Management together for end-to-end NetSuite workflows

Updated this week

ExtendInsights Analytics and ExtendInsights Data Management are designed to work together, but they serve different purposes.

Understanding how each app works and when to use each will help you build efficient, end-to-end workflows in Excel.

At a Glance

  • Analytics = reporting, analysis, and scheduling (read-only data)

  • Data Management = creating, updating, and deleting NetSuite records

  • You cannot edit Analytics-generated worksheets using Data Management

  • Use Analytics for insights, then Data Management templates to take action

Unified Experience (If You Have Both Licenses)

If your organization is licensed for both Analytics and Data Management:

  • No separate add-ins are required

  • One login connects you to NetSuite for both apps

  • Both features are available in a single ExtendInsights interface

  • Use your Microsoft or Google account for access

🎥 Why Use ExtendInsights with NetSuite?

ExtendInsights combines analytics, automation, and data management in Excel, allowing you to analyze data and take action without switching tools.

Why Am I Seeing “This Report Was Generated via Analytics”?

You’ll see the message “This report was generated via Analytics” when:

  • The worksheet was downloaded using ExtendInsights Analytics, and

  • You’re viewing that worksheet while the Data Management tab is selected

💡 This is expected behavior, not an error.

Analytics worksheets are read-only by design. They are intended for:

  • Reporting

  • Analysis

  • Lookups

  • Scheduling

They are not connected to Data Management templates.

Because of this:

  • Create / Update / Delete actions are disabled

  • Data Management cannot modify Analytics-generated tables

What You Need to Update Records

To create, update, or delete NetSuite records in Excel, you must have:

  • A license for ExtendInsights Data Management

  • A Data Management template for the record type you want to work with

Best Practice: Use Analytics Data as Lookups

Analytics data works best as reference data for Data Management workflows.

Recommended Workflow

  1. Use Analytics to download a Saved Search (e.g., customers, items, subsidiaries).

  2. Ensure the Saved Search includes the Internal ID.

  3. Use the Analytics data as a lookup source.

  4. Copy the required values into a Data Management template.

  5. Run the update using Data Management.

⚠️ Important: Always Include the Internal ID

When using Analytics data as lookups, always include the Internal ID to ensure accurate record matching.

Recommended formulas:

  • {name} & "[[" & {id} & "]]"

  • "[[" & {id} & "]]"

🚫 What You Should Not Do

To avoid errors or unexpected behavior:

  • Do not try to edit Analytics-generated worksheets using Data Management

  • Do not remove required columns from Data Management templates

  • Do not exclude Internal IDs when preparing update files
