Troubleshooting: XAVI Formula Returns N/A

ExtendInsights FRE | Identify and resolve errors returned by XAVI formulas

ExtendInsights Financial Reporting uses XAVI formulas to retrieve financial data from NetSuite. If a formula cannot retrieve or calculate the requested data, the cell returns N/A and provides a more descriptive error message.

Use the error details to identify what needs to be corrected.

Symptoms / Error Message

You may encounter the following behavior:

  • A cell containing a XAVI formula displays N/A.

  • A warning icon appears when you select or hover over the affected cell.

  • Selecting the warning icon displays additional information about the error.

Why This Happens

A XAVI formula may return N/A when:

  • The account number referenced in the formula does not exist in NetSuite.

  • The account is marked Inactive in NetSuite.

  • The account did not exist yet in NetSuite during the period being reported, such as a prior period in a comparative report. This is expected behavior, not an error. See If an Account Shows N/A in a Prior Period below.

  • The formula contains an incorrect or unsupported value.

  • ExtendInsights cannot retrieve the requested data.

  • An HTTP error interrupts communication between ExtendInsights and NetSuite.

The detailed error message identifies the reason the formula could not resolve.

How to Resolve the Issue

Review the Error Message

  1. Locate the cell displaying N/A.

  2. Hover over or select the affected cell.

  3. Click the warning icon.

  4. Review the detailed error message.

  5. Correct the formula or its referenced values based on the message.

  6. Recalculate or refresh the report.

If the Account Does Not Exist or Is Inactive

  1. Review the account number used in the XAVI formula.

  2. Confirm that the account exists in NetSuite.

  3. Check that the account number matches the value stored in NetSuite.

  4. Check whether the account is marked Inactive in NetSuite. Inactive accounts return N/A.

  5. Correct the account number in the formula or its referenced cell.

  6. Recalculate the formula.

If an Account Shows N/A in a Prior Period

In a comparative report (current period vs. prior period, or year over year), an account may show N/A in an earlier column instead of $0. This means the account had not been created in your NetSuite chart of accounts as of that period. There is no recorded balance for it, not even a zero.

A $0 would make a different statement: that the account existed and nothing posted to it. That difference matters when you analyze the numbers:

  • Faithful representation. Under the FASB conceptual framework, useful financial information should be complete, neutral, and free from error, and "free from error" includes no omissions in the description of what's being reported. Showing $0 for an account that didn't exist would present a fact that never happened.

  • Comparability. The same framework says that for information to be comparable, "like things must look alike and different things must look different." An account with no activity and an account that didn't exist yet are different situations, so they should look different on the report.

  • Variance analysis. A change measured from a period when the account didn't exist isn't meaningful. Most reporting packages mark these cases "N/M" (not meaningful) rather than showing a 100% increase from zero. N/A gives the same signal and keeps the variance from being read as real growth.

Once the account exists, its balance displays normally in every later period, including $0 when nothing posted.

Displaying $0 Instead

If you prefer to show $0 for presentation purposes, wrap the formula in an IF statement. Because this N/A is returned as a text value rather than an Excel error, IFERROR will not replace it. For example:

=IF(XAVI.BALANCE($A7,C$5,C$5)="#N/A",0,XAVI.BALANCE($A7,C$5,C$5))

If an HTTP Error Occurs

  1. Confirm that your internet connection is active.

  2. Verify that ExtendInsights remains connected to NetSuite.

  3. Refresh the report or recalculate the formula.

  4. If the error continues, reconnect to NetSuite and try again.

Verification

The issue is resolved when:

  • The cell displays the expected financial value instead of N/A.

  • The warning icon no longer appears.

  • Refreshing or recalculating the report does not return the same error.

Best Practices

  • Review the detailed error message before changing the formula.

  • Confirm account numbers, account status (active or inactive), and other formula inputs directly in NetSuite.

  • If the formula references another Excel cell, check the value in that cell.

  • Compare the affected formula with a working XAVI formula in the same report.

  • When contacting Support, include the formula, detailed error message, and a screenshot of the affected cell.
