Manage Records: Background Upload in ExtendInsights for Data Management NetSuite

ExtendInsights Data Management | How Background Upload works and when to use it

Updated today

Background Upload (formerly Burst Upload) is designed for users who need to upload large volumes of records or queue multiple uploads without waiting for each one to finish.

Even if you close your Excel, the jobs will run in the background, and you can continue working when you open the workbook again to check the status of the upload or manage records.

What Is Background Upload?

With Background Upload:

  • All data is submitted at once

  • The job is sent to NetSuite

  • Records are processed asynchronously in NetSuite

  • You can submit additional ExtendInsights jobs while uploads are running

How to Know a Background Upload Is Running

While a Background Upload is in progress:

  • An orange ribbon bar appears in the ExtendInsights panel

To check the status of the upload, click Check Status, and it will route you to the Upload Status page.

Upload Status Page: What You Can Do

From the Upload Status page, you can:

  • View active background jobs with estimated completion time

  • Manually refresh job status

  • Review historical uploads (completed jobs)

  • Filter jobs by:

    • Successful

    • Failed

  • See detailed logs for troubleshooting

💡 Good to know:
You no longer need to manually download results after a Background Upload completes. ExtendInsights automatically updates your workbook with the results.

⭐ Key Benefits of Background Upload

  • Accommodates large uploads.

  • Users can immediately begin working with other ExtendInsights Excel workbooks and worksheets.

  • Users can submit other ExtendInsights batches.

  • Once the job is submitted, users do not need to monitor it. Users can even close Excel and turn off their computer, letting a large update process run over lunch (or overnight)

⚠️ NetSuite Transaction Line Limits

NetSuite enforces limits on the number of lines allowed per transaction. These limits differ between Real-Time (synchronous) and Background (asynchronous) uploads.

Common Limits

  • Journal Entries

    • Real-Time Upload: 1,000 lines

    • Background Upload: 10,000 lines

  • Other Transactions

    • Up to 5,000 lines

➡️ Refer to NetSuite documentation for the most up-to-date limits.

Real-Time vs Background Upload

  • Real-Time Upload

    • Best for small datasets

    • Immediate feedback

  • Background Upload

    • Best for large or complex datasets

    • Asynchronous and non-blocking
