FAQ: How to Default to Background Upload

ExtendInsights Data Management | Configure Background Upload as the default option

Updated this week

Background Upload is recommended when working with large datasets or when you want to queue multiple uploads without waiting for each one to complete. When enabled, records are submitted in bulk and processed asynchronously in NetSuite, allowing you to continue working in Excel.

When Should I Default to Background Upload?

Background Upload is best when:

  • Uploading large numbers of records or lines

  • Running multiple uploads at the same time

  • You don’t want Excel locked during processing

  • Uploads may take longer than 40 seconds

⚠️ Important:
Defaulting Background Upload for all worksheets is not recommended for small datasets, as it may result in slower processing compared to Real-Time Upload.

How to Set Background Upload as the Default

You can enable Background Upload by default for all worksheets from Settings.

  1. Click the Menu button in ExtendInsights.

  2. Go to Settings.

  3. Toggle Background Upload by default to ON.

Once enabled, uploads from all worksheets will use Background Upload unless you manually switch.

Automatic Prompt: Real-Time vs Background Upload

ExtendInsights monitors upload size and duration. If an upload exceeds certain thresholds, you’ll be prompted to switch to Background Upload.

Upload Thresholds

Record Type

Real-Time Upload (Synchronous)

Background Upload (Asynchronous)

Journal Entries

Up to 1,000 rows

More than 1,000 rows

All other record types

Up to 5,000 rows

More than 5,000 rows

💡 Note:
Even if you start in Real-Time mode, ExtendInsights will prompt you to switch to Background Upload if a batch takes longer than ~40 seconds. You can choose to switch at that time or continue in Real-Time.

Summary

  • Background Upload processes data asynchronously

  • You can enable it as the default from Settings

  • It’s best suited for large uploads and parallel processing

  • ExtendInsights will prompt you to switch automatically when needed
